House Concerts

Of Doug Lipman's "The Soul of Hope"

No concert hall is required to hear this moving performance!
This brief guide tells you how to set up a concert in your own home.

If you would like help or more information, just call 918-712-7336. Toll free: (888) 446-4738. Or email Doug Lipman: soul@storydynamics.com.

"Hosting a house concert was a delight! People were still talking about it weeks later. And Doug made it very easy - all we had to do was invite our friends." - Brian McCorkle, Arlington, MA

The Soul of Hope

  • is a two-hour-plus, one-person storytelling show
  • incorporates flute and guitar.
  • is in two acts
    1. Act I is 70 minutes in length
    2. Act II is 55 minutes long.
  • includes a 10-minute or longer intermission. You can serve refreshments if you wish.

What is a house concert?

  • A house concert is a full performance of this two-hour show.
  • It happens in a private home in front of an audience.
  • The audience can range in size from 4 to 30 people. (For larger groups, please check out formal concerts.)

One important note: Doug is allergic to cats - even to a house where cats used to live. Dogs are O.K.

Arranging a date and time

Call 918-712-7336. Toll free: (888) 446-4738. Doug's schedule tends to fill up a month or two in advance, but he sometimes has open dates on short notice.

This concert lasts from two hours and ten minutes to two-and-a-half hours (including an intermission). Doug needs at least 30 minutes in your home before the show to set up, tune up, and warm up.

Finances

Doug charges a flat fee for a house concert, depending on the day of the week, travel requirements, etc. His lowest fee is $200; his highest for a house concert is $350 plus travel and lodging. If you want to offer this performance as a gift to your friends, you can just pay Doug on the day of the event.

If you want your friends to pay for some or all of Doug's fee, decide on the number of guests you'd like and the amount you'd like them to pay.

Here are some typical fees, numbers of guests, and resulting sums:

If the numbers look confusing

Typical fees for house concerts
number of guests fee total
10 guests $20 each $200
13 guests $15 each $195
15 guests $12.50 each $187.50
20 guests $10 each $200
25 guests $8 each $200
30 guests $7 each $210

Notify your friends

It's easiest to just call some friends and invite them to the house concert the way you'd invite them to a party.

If you want printed materials to mail or hand out, Doug will provide you with materials that you can duplicate and include with an invitation:

  • a personalized flier, and/or
  • copies of an article about this show

You may want to keep count of who's coming by asking your friends to R.S.V.P.

Setting up the space

You will want Doug to stand in an area where there will not be distracting sounds like dishwashers or air conditioners. If your space is large or noisy, Doug can help by bringing his sound system.

Doug brings a floor-stand candelabra (when he travels by car). (Maybe any smoke detector directly above the performance area should have its battery removed for these two hours.) If Doug is unable to drive to your location, he will need a small table or pedestal on which to put his five candles.

Doug needs:

  • a chair without arms,
  • about four feet of open space in front of the chair, and
  • about four feet of floor space on each side of the chair.
Ideally, there should be a shelf or small table near Doug where he can rest his flute and a glass of water (please).

When the concert is ready to begin

Please turn off the ringers of any phones that might interrupt the performance. If there might be latecomers, decide who will greet and seat them once the show has begun.

Doug will provide programs for you to hand out to your guests. Or, if you prefer, you can simply print out and duplicate the complete, on-line audience program .

"The Soul of Hope blew the roof off of my apartment complex. People were calling me to re-tell it to me - because they had to re-experience the story. It was that powerful!" - Marni Gillard, Demar, NY
